Phoenix (August 25, 2010) — The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors recently approved an operating agreement that will allow racing to resume at Arizona Motorsports Park (“AMP”) but only under specific noise levels. The facility is situated on 148 acres on Camelback Road and west of Litchfield Road in unincorporated Maricopa County, with Goodyear and Litchfield Park city limits very nearby. Residents in the vicinity of the racetrack filled school auditoriums and were very vocal in their objection to the noise coming from this facility since it opened in 2003 but they were silent during this latest action by the Board of Supervisors. Early opposition resulted in a 2004 Board decision that put the racetrack out of business. This decision was overturned by the Arizona Court of Appeals last year.
County Supervisor Max Wilson and Litchfield Park Mayor Tom Schoaf seem pleased with the efforts made
in these negotiations which resulted in measurable noise levels and strict enforcement procedures with which the racetrack must comply. Goodyear Mayor Jim Cavanaugh, however is not as enamored by the recent decision which is likely due to the outcry of his constituents about noisy activity coming from the racetrack when it opened. The agreement contains a revocation process if intrusive noise once again becomes a problem for local residents. AMP is obviously happy to resume business as usual and they plan to be a good community partner.
