Phoenix (August 26, 2010) — The Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa, being rebranded to simply “the Wigwam” in recognition of its history, is undergoing a $7 million renovation that is scheduled for completion in January. This initiative has been a priority of Jerry Colangelo’s investment group, JDM Partners, that purchased the resort in a bankruptcy auction in December. The group spent 2 months investigating the local perspective of the changes that were necessary to restore life to this Southwest Valley jewel. They found several local residents that had a personal tie to the resort in Litchfield Park, which was recognized by “Phoenix Magazine” as “one of the 8 best places to live in Arizona.”
Built 80 years ago, the resort is situated on 440 acres and will remain open during construction, offering restaurants, swimming pools, Red Door Spa, fitness center, tennis courts, golf courses and meeting and banquet facilities.
The entrance offers a nod to the past with a wood-beamed archway and a front porch off to the side. These are just a few of the changes that are aimed at restoring the property’s historical significance and welcoming local clientele. Other improvements include renovation of the Oasis Pool which was completed in May. The ongoing renovation of the buildings will add windows and move things around to take advantage of the Arizona weather. Other changes will afford the opportunity and flexibility to conduct a variety of events for all types of guests in unique spots throughout the property, from weddings, to meetings to private parties.
Other exciting changes include the relocation, redesign and expansion of the Adobe Pool and creation of a new entertainment area that will ultimately include 2 separate pools which will be connected by a canal, luxury cabanas, poolside bar, hot tub, 25-foot tower with water slides and a splash fountain.
The investment group also wants to capitalize on the nearby sports facilities to bring in new clientele. Changes are also in store for the Wigwam’s dining opportunities. James Beard Award-winning chef Chris Bianco, of Pizzeria Bianco fame, has been brought onboard to consult on the resort’s new food and beverage menus.
